Cupping is a therapy designed to stimulate the flow of circulation within the superficial muscle layers. It is used for many ailments including sore muscles, tension, neck pain and the common cold. The acupuncturist will place small glass, plastic, or bamboo ‘cups’ over specific areas on your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat or suction. The cups may be moved over an affected area or left in place. The cupping treatment brings “sha” or blockage up to the surface of the skin where it is more easily cleared by the body. Cupping marks can typically be colorful, ranging from light pink to deep purple depending on the level of tension or pain that is present. The cupping marks left behind can last several days and sometimes several weeks as the body continues to heal, but will eventually dissipate.
